What would you do if a sexy billionaire asked you to marry him just for his money?
Scarlett hates her new job as a stripper, but she can’t afford to quit or she’ll lose her house and won’t be able to afford to pay for her dad’s chemo. One night, the handsome billionaire Michael Manning visits the club and shows interest in Samantha—Scarlett’s stage name. Scarlett is immediately attracted to Michael, but she refuses to date anyone she meets at the club.
The next day, Scarlett’s friend drags her to church, and to her surprise, Scarlett meets Michael again. He doesn't realize she’s Samantha from last night (she wears a mask while performing) and asks her out. But Scarlett would never have guessed what kind of a scandalous, yet utterly irresistible deal he’s about to propose...
* This is the first part of Scarlett and Michael's story, which continues in "The White Chapel" (Book 2) and concludes in "The Everlasting Chapel" (Book 3).

Couldn't quite give it 5 stars due to some editing mistakes but it was a good, entertaining read. Main complaint is the majority of the book happened so fast, within a couple of weeks. Not much personal info given about Michael, it would have been nice to have more of his history. He is not flamboyant, dominant or a playboy. She seems to be good at heart, just in a financial bind beyond her control, trying to take care of her father. The book description call this a *Steamy Romantic Comedy...not sure where the comedy was...there was some cute interacation between them but would not consider this book a Comedy, so that is rather misleading. As far as steamy, there were some sex scenes in the book but there are no erotic type details given.

The Black Chapel Book 1 in the Steamy New Adult Romance Series The Chapel Series edition by Marilyn Cruise Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
The chemistry is there, then it's not, then it's there, then it's not......are you kind of guessing the theme of this read. She lied by omission, he just flipped back and forth between her and her stripper persona, so she continues her life by omission. With all this it seems her life was unforgivable but not his. They love each other, I guess, but still it just always seemed to be all about the money....which was no small amount....but still that whole thread of the story persisted through the whole book, and I just kept hoping that their feelings for each other would finally take over the whole inheritance issue. There is an HEA, but it just wasn't as exciting or engaging as it could have been.
I did enjoy some parts of this book. It was a bit funny and sexy but I just found it very unrealistic! They were dealing in billions of dollars, not just millions! How did Michael not suspect a thing or do some checking into Scarlett's past at all? How could he not recognize some similarities in these women? Then he's very upset that Scarlett didn't tell him the truth but he's just as bad, if not worse!... Lying and cheating!!! When I originally read this it was a standalone book and I definitely didn't think it needed a sequel.
A cannot put down book. I think I read it straight thru. Beautiful love story without resolution. Would have given this 5 stars had there been a resolution and maybe given it four stars had the resolution been in book 2, but from the description it looks like the resolution may not be until book 3 which is not yet available. Had I known this, I would have never read it. Total anticlimactic ending.
The Black Chapel is an enjoyable choice for a lazy weekend of reading. In this erotic romance, the heroine Scarlett needs to find a balance between two sides of her personality – the “good girl” and the “naughty vixen” (and deal with the consequences). What woman can’t relate to that? Because it’s a short story, things move pretty fast so there is not a lot of character development, especially when it comes to the male lead. And while the idea of a billionaire asking a total stranger to marry him was a bit far-fetched, for a light read it worked.
Marylyn, please spend a little more time on a good edit. I slogged my way through this and found multiple errors. The writing is mediocre at best. The plot is okay but a little of "been there done that". Rich guy needs wife, finds poor girl who needs money. I feel that anyone graduating from Harvard even if her degree is in Art History should be able to find a decent job that doesn't require her to take her clothes off. She could have worked outside her degree in another field. Also you have her as twenty one years old. From he timeline she has been stripping for six months. So she is either in the last half of her 21st year or the first half. Either way it means she graduated college at 20 or 21. She would have had to start (given a college degree usually take 4 years) at age 16 or 17. If you are going to write books then make them logical to a certain extent. I will not be reading the next book in the series, even though the ending leaves you hanging. Scarlet will have to go on without me.
I was disappointed that this book did not stand alone but left you needing to buy the next book and that is why it only got 3 stars. It is a good story about a girl who is stripping to make money to pay her dads chemo and bills. She actually meets a guy in church who has been ogling her in a good way at the club. Since she wears a mask, she doesn't know if he recognizes her. He wants her to be a pretend bride so his dying rich mom will leave him her estate. Typical romance with a twist.
So the romance was wanting but I did enjoy the way Scarlett was able to juggle being two people at once without getting the lies mixed up. That was entertaining as all get out. And her dedication to helping her dad even though it was a degrading experience gave her a bit of dimension. But I must confess, it was crystal clear it was a ploy to make you care more about her character because if she didn’t have that going for her, she would have fizzled out for me. That was really the only thing I liked about her.
I kinda think Michael should have know it was Scarlett once he kissed ‘them’. I mean, he doesn’t even mention it, which I just found weird. And frankly it made me think he was missing a few sandwiches short of a picnic. Now, the sex scenes were on point and I’m glad I read this book, but the characters were just too flat for me to really care about them or what happens to them. The plot is shallow to begin with so I guess I should have expected it.
So, I will not be reading anymore of this series because the ending had too many loose ends that I felt should have been tied up in this book in stead of leaving them hanging to entice you to read the next one. This may sound weird but it didn’t feel like an authentic ending. It felt unoriginal. Maybe I read to many of these types of books because it felt trope-y and while I love a good trope, this one just was okay.
